RNW

A Dutch crime reporter, John van den Heuvel,  has interviewed Joran van der Sloot at the infamous high security Miguel Castro Castro prison in the Peruvian capital Lima.

Joran van der Sloot is awaiting trial for the murder of Peruvian woman Stephany Flores in May. The body of Ms Flores was found in the suspect's hotel room in Lima. Joran van der Sloot was arrested after a police tracked him down in Chile. Joran van der Sloot met Ms Flores, the daugther of a rich Peruvian racing driver and businessman Ricardo Flores, at a casino. Mr van der Sloot is caught on film leaving the hotel room alone. A couple of days later the beaten body of the woman was found. A attempt by the suspect to withdraw a confession of the murder has been rejected by the judge. The murder took place on the fifth anniversary of US teenager Natalee Holloway's disappearance.

Mr van der Sloot became notorious following the disappearance of Natalee Holloway on the Dutch island of Aruba in 2005. He is still the main suspect in the case. Another crime reporter Peter R. de Vries secretly filmed Mr van der Sloot describing how Ms Holloway had died on the beach and how he had dumped her body in the sea. In spite of the alleged confession, the Aruban police have been unable to prosecute their prime suspect.

Mr van den Heuvel has also interviewed the murder suspect's mother, who says she will not visit her son if he is convicted. The programme "Joran speaks" will be broadcast by RTL television on Monday. The television station is not giving any details on the interview.
