07/09/2005Dutch sends water pumps to New Orleans

7 September 2005

AMSTERDAM — The Netherlands is sending three water pomps to the New Orleans disaster area.

An American transport plane was due to land at the air base in Eindhoven on Wednesday evening to collect the pomps and a freight vehicle.

Five Dutch water control experts will also travel back to the US with the pumps, the Foreign Affairs Ministry in The Hague said on Wednesday.

The pumps and the experts are part of the Dutch contribution to the international relief effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A large portion of New Orleans was flooded after the hurricane overwhelmed the dikes protecting the city.

The Dutch frigate hr.ms. Van Amstel arrived off the Gulf Coast with medical personnel, bottled water and other supplies for the stricken region.
