Ministry reshuffle announced

Junior Minister (staatssecretaris) Joop Wijn has been named to replace the D66 party's Laurens Jan Brinkhorst at the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Joop is a member of the Christian Democrat Party (CDA) and has been in charge of tax policy. Ministry of Finance Gerrit Zalm is taking charge of the tax brief. Junior minister Atzo Nicolaï is to add the Kingdom Affairs department to his European responsibilities.  Interior Minister Johan Remkes is to look after Government Reform. The division of responsibility was made necessary by the resignation of Brinkhorst and his colleague Alexander Pechtold last week when D66 withdrew support from the governing coalition.

Motorists warned of slippy roads

While the country basked in 30-degree temperatures, the national police service KLPD warned that rain showers on Wednesday afternoon could lead to slippy roads. This is because a lot of sand and rubber debris has built up on the roads during the heatwave. The combination of the dirt and rain could lead to longer braking times, the KLPD said.

Boy, 4, drowns in pond

A boy, 4, drowned on Tuesday evening when he fell into a pond at Barendrecht.The boy got lost while visiting the Vrijenburg Park with his parents. Fire Brigade divers found his body in a pond but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

'Intelligent' European search engine launched

A new search engine has been launched for people living and working in the European Union. Broadcaster EuroNews announced on Tuesday that it is partnering the innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based search engine, which performs searches in seven languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch). " is a celebration of a new union – a true union of Internet users and information seekers," Eckhard Pfeiffer, Chairman of Accoona said.

Man dies in police cell

A Rotterdam man, 32, died in a police cell shortly after his arrest on Tuesday morning. An investigation has been launched and the authorities are not commenting on the possible cause of death. The man had been arrested on domestic violence allegations.

1,500 speeding tickets scrapped

A procedural fault has led to 1,556 motorists escaping fines for speeding on the A1 at the weekend. National police service KLPD confirmed the speed camera on the motorway between Muiden and Diemen had not received its annual check on 30 June as required to confirm it was working accurately.
