08/05/2008Illegal sex workers in Dutch hotels

Hotels are giving out numbers of sex workers without making sure they are not victims of human trafficking.

8 May 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch association of escort services and massage parlours says illegal prostitution takes places in major hotel chains throughout the whole country.

Today's Trouw writes about the large number of illegal prostitutes renting rooms in hotels belonging to all major chains.

According to the paper, these hotels hardly ever bother to check whether it concerns legal prostitution or victims of people trafficking.

The branch organisation of the legal sex industry, the VER, says it has received a large number of reports showing that guests at hotels owned by the major chains can easily order prostitutes via phone numbers obtained from doormen and at reception desks.

The reports received by the VER show that there were never any checks made to see if the prostitute in question was a legal sex worker.

In most of the cases, the women involved were foreigners from countries that only recently joined the EU, such as Romania and Bulgaria. The VER says these women are often the victims of people trafficking who are being exploited as prostitutes.

The hotel chains deny that illegal prostitution occurs at their hotels, but said they were aware of a letter regarding the issue that VER wrote to the major chains in April.
