Dutch farmers healthier than most

THE NETHERLANDS – Dutch farmers are on average much healthier than the rest of the population, says the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research.

A survey of 100 general practitioners shows farmers are 40 percent less likely to suffer from psychological problems such as depression, anxiety and stress.

The chance of farmers suffering from bronchial complaints is 30 percent less than among other Dutch people. They are also prescribed less medication for cardio-vascular diseases.

The institute said the marked differences between farmers and the rest of the population cannot be explained simply by arguing that most of them run a one-man business and are less likely to have time to visit their general practitioners.

The institute added further research will need to be conducted to find out why farmers seem to stay healthier.
