05/03/2010Dutch troops to stay in Sudan until 2011

The Dutch contribution to the UN peace mission in Sudan will be extended by one year, the Dutch caretaker cabinet said after its weekly meeting on Friday. The decision was taken following a request from the United Nations.

The Netherlands have some thirty military observers and police trainers in Sudan, who will stay until April 2011. The aim of the UN mission in Sudan is to make sure the 2005 peace accord is observed.

The Dutch decision comes exactly two weeks after a NATO request to keep a military presence in Uruzgan led to the resignation of the government's Labour ministers and the collapse of the Christian-led coalition.
