22/03/2010Dutch prince praises clean water projects

Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander has given a speech in Nairobi, Kenya to mark World Water Day.

The prince, who is chair of the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation, said World Water Day will become more important every year. He believes local initiatives are the right way to go and thousands of local initiatives are being set up for clean water.

During the meeting in Nairobi, a report was presented which calls for investment into the prevention of leakage. In some countries more than half of the clean water is leaks out of pipelines.

The World Wildlife Fund and Twente University calculated how much water an average Dutchman uses. Per head, 2.3 million litres of water are used every year. This is almost twice the world average.
