AMSTERDAM — Tax lawyer Ernest Louwes is offering a EUR 100,000 reward for information that will clear him of murdering a wealthy widow in Deventer.
An advertisement about the reward will appear in Tuesday's edition of local newspaper 'Deventer Courant', pollster Maurice de Hond said. De Hond has become the leading spokesperson of the campaign to overturn the conviction.
Louwes was sentenced to 12 years by a court in Den Bosch in 2000 for the murder of Jacqueline Wittenberg, 60, a year earlier. Her tax lawyer and the executor of her will, Louwes has always denied killing her.
The case has a complicated legal history. The first attempt to prosecute Louwes failed but he was found guilty by a court in Arnhem when the case was taken a second time.
New facts cast doubt on the conviction and he was freed for a short time. The conviction was confirmed by an appeals court in 2004.
De Hond faces legal action for suggesting a local handyman murdered Wittenberg. The pollster is demanding that the authorities conduct a full review of the case.
