Seven groups plan demos in The Hague on September 20

They include the Pro Patria group which plans to hold a ‘march for freedom’ as a follow-up to this month’s anti-Muslim extremism demo, which ended in clashes with pro-Gaza supporters.

A ban on rallies in the Schilderswijk district has led Pro Patria to shift its plans to the Transvaal district where 90 percent of the residents also have an ethnic minority background.

The other planned rallies are by the Muslim Defence League Holland which has claimed the Malieveld open space close to parliament.

The extreme-right Nederlandse Volks Unie plans to press ahead with a demonstration in the Schilderswijk and the left-wing Anti-Fascistische Actie plans to try to stop them, the Telegraaf says.

Residents of both the Transvaal and Schilderswijk districts also plan to try to organise a ‘peaceful blockade’ to stop Pro Patria.

Peace week

The Telegraaf points out that September 20 is the start of the annual ‘peace weekend’ to mark the UN’s International Day of Peace on September 21.

In addition, parts of the Malieveld are occupied by the traditional September fair.

Mayors in the Netherlands have the right to ban demonstrations if they fear there is a risk to public order.

The city council has confirmed it has been notified about seven demonstrations but has declined to state who the organisers are, the Telegraaf says.
