02/07/2009No more single-sex integration courses: MPs

The lower house of parliament has expressed concern that separate classes do not reflect the makeup of Dutch society.

The Hague – The lower house of parliament has called on integration minister Eberhard van der Laan to stop single-sex integration and citizenship classes in Dutch municipalities.

Some 15 percent of Dutch municipalities currently offer single-sex courses.

Supporters of separate classes said it increases the number of women who participate, but opponents countered that it perpetuates stereotypical ideas about women and does not promote equality between the sexes.

Opponents also said single-sex classes do not reflect the makeup of Dutch society and will not help people integrate.

Van der Laan said he will investigate the matter.
