The interior ministry reports that 86 percent of all violence against homosexuals is committed by native Dutch people.

18 November 2008

AMSTERDAM - Data published by the interior ministry shows that violence against homosexuals is committed mostly by native Dutch people rather than immigrants. In 86 percent of all reported incidents, the perpetrator was a native Dutch person.

2008 is the first year that police are keeping separate records for violence against gay people, and in the first six months, police received 150 complaints.

More than 25 percent of the cases involved physical violence, often on the street near the victim's home, or near gay meeting places and gay bars. Other cases involved verbal aggression, threats or slogans written on victims' homes.

It is a shame! I thought that homosexuality is an accepted thing in Netherlands, especially the way it is portrayed to the outside world. But it is amazing how you easily hear people making dirty jokes about gays 100 times more than where i came from where being gay is a taboo. Could this then mean that the society does not accept it and therefore are socializing their children against it creating the worst kind of prejudice? Where did the whole gospel of tolerance in our culture go? Is it really true we are a tolerant nation? Look at the messages we are passing on about muslims and immigrants. Is it yet time to take stock and come to grasps with who we really are rather than who we wish we were as Dutch people? Whether you are for gays or not, prejudice should not be allowed to take root in our society.
