31/10/2008Justice minister wants imams to explain trip

The minister hopes to speak to five imams working in the Ministry of Justice to learn more about the trip.

31 October 2008

THE NETHERLANDS – The Dutch Minister of Justice wants to speak to five imams who travelled from the Netherlands to Morocco last week for a training course.

The five imams who work for the Ministry of Justice were part of the 40 who were invited by the authorities in Rabat to Morocco. The clerics left without consulting the boards which administer the mosques on Friday.

Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin told the Lower House that he wants to know more about the trip from the five civil servants.

While he is not against imams improving their knowledge, he wants Morocco to be more open about its activities.

The trip is sensitive because there are fears that Rabat is trying to exert influence on its nationals abroad. Morocco says the imams attended a one-day course to inform them about reforms in the religious system and on how to prevent radicalisation.
