30/09/2008Improvements at Dutch detention centres

In response to criticism, Justice Minister Albayrak announces better conditions for asylum seekers awaiting deportation.

30 September 2008

THE HAGUE -- In a letter to parliament, Deputy Justice Minister Nebahat Albayrak writes that failed asylum seekers waiting for deportation will be given greater freedom of movement.

Her announcement comes after criticism from organisations such as Amnesty International, which argue that the Netherlands is treating aliens like criminals.

Ms Albayrak will ease the regime at immigration detention centres. The measures will probably include more frequent visits to the exercise yard, better sports and library facilities and longer visiting hours.
