The Dutch world champion skater Rintje Ritsma is hanging up his skates at the age of 38.

THE NETHERLANDS -- The Dutch world champion skater Rintje Ritsma has announced his retirement from competitive skating.

The 38-year-old speed skater a four-time world champion and six-time European champion, is considered to be one of the greatest all-round Dutch skaters.  He is also founder of the first professional skating team in the Netherlands.

In his career, Ritsma won the World Allround Championships four times. He has also won two silver and four bronze medals at the Winter Olympics, from the 1994, 1998 and 2006 Games.
