Dutchman Epke Zonderland has won silver at the Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam at the weekend. His magnificent performance on the horizontal bar was only surpassed by the Chinese gymnast Zhang Chenglong.

It is the second time Zonderland has won a silver medal in the World Championships. In spite of being disappointed initially, Zonderland was pleased and called it "a victory over myself."

His training in the lead up to the competition had been interrupted by shoulder problems and a back injury. As a result he had been unable to participate in serious competition.

Jeffrey Wammes came in eighth and last place in the final of the vault. In spite of receiving a warm welcome from spectators, the athlete said "I was not relaxed." The gold medal for the vault went to Frenchman Thomas Bouhail.
