Zeegers' girlfriend released

24 October 2007, AMSTERDAM – The court in Amsterdam on Tuesday suspended the pre-trial detention of the 33-year-old girlfriend of recently deceased former lawyer Bram Zeegers. She does remain a suspect in the case however and must remain available for the investigation.

AMSTERDAM – The court in Amsterdam on Tuesday suspended the pre-trial detention of the 33-year-old girlfriend of recently deceased former lawyer Bram Zeegers. She does remain a suspect in the case however and must remain available for the investigation.

The police found 58-year-old Zeegers dead in a bathtub in his home in Amsterdam-Zuid on 9 October. Examination indicated that he died of an overdose of MDMA. The girlfriend had bought the xtc pills and taken them herself as well. She had also become unwell but was arrested nonetheless on the same day.

Another suspect, a 39-year-old man from Diemen, remains in custody. The court extended his pre-trial detention by 30 days. The justice department suspects him of manslaughter or culpable homicide and violation of narcotics legislation. He reportedly supplied the fatal drugs, according to the public prosecution department.

A week before Zeegers' death the former lawyer testified in court in the Holleeder trial. Zeegers was for years a confidant and friend to real estate magnate Willem Endstra, who was murdered in 2004.
