AMSTERDAM- Former lawyer Bram Zeegers, found dead in his Amsterdam apartment early Tuesday, was not murdered but died of a drugs overdose, police said late Thursday.

Zeegers had testified in court earlier this month against top criminal Willem Holleeder, and there had been rife speculation that Holleeder was involved in Zeegers' death.

But a police spokeswoman said the Dutch Forensic Institute NFI established that Zeegers had died of an overdose of MDMA - a narcotic commonly known as XTC, an illegal variation of mescaline and amphetamine.

Zeegers death came just days after he had testified against Holleeder. According to his lawyer, Zeegers was planning to tell him "the last details" about Holleeder on Friday.

Holleeder is standing trial on charges of involvement in the assassination of Willem Endstra in 2004. Zeegers was a close friend of Endstra, a businessman active in the real estate industry.
