AMSTERDAM — US Treasury Secretary John Snow has complimented his Dutch counterpart Gerrit Zalm for what he described as his leadership in tackling the financing of terrorism.
During a visit to The Hague on Monday, Snow asked Zalm to organise a special conference on financial measures that can be taken against suspected terrorists and their financial backers.
Zalm indicated that such a conference could be held in early 2006. The issue will also be on the agenda at the G7 meeting on Washington in September this year.
Snow said the Netherlands was one of the few countries to have put effective measures in place to hamper the financing of terrorism. The Netherlands, Snow said, was America's first connection in this field.
After their meeting, Zalm eluded to the fact that it was the US Treasury rather than the Justice Department that finally put infamous gangster Al Capone behind bars.
Capone was jailed for 10 years for tax evasion in 1931 after a long career in which he always avoided conviction for the countless murders he was known to have ordered.
