AMSTERDAM — Deputy Prime Minister Gerrit Zalm said on Friday he was annoyed at how Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk was treated by an Amsterdam alderman and ChristenUnie MP this week.

Defending his party colleague, the Liberal VVD minister said a "hunt" for Verdonk had been called.

Amsterdam Alderman Ahmed Aboutaleb accused Verdonk of using the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh to score political points.

Huizinga compared the current deportations of rejected asylum seekers to Nazi crimes during World War II.

Zalm said on Friday he supported Verdonk's demand that Aboutaleb apologise.

He said Huizinga did not need to say sorry because she is an MP. However, Zalm also said her comments were below the belt.

Zalm made his comments at the weekly TV talk with the prime minister.

He had stood in for Christian Democrat CDA leader Jan Peter Balkenende who was attending an EU summit in Lahti, in Finland.
