UTRECHT –  Young people find alcohol advertisements too attractive. This is the conclusion the Foundation for Alcohol Prevention (STAP) reached in its report on trends in alcohol advertising and marketing 2006.

In 2006 advertising for alcohol often added humour and life style in their advertisements for alcoholic drinks. In an attempt to improve the marketing of their products humour has become an essential component in 36 percent of  alcohol advertisements.

The survey conducted by STAP has shown that humour in commercials appeals particularly to young people.

STAP also concluded that the alcohol industry is becoming increasingly similar to the entertainment industry. “Internet sites advertising alcoholic drinks offer lots of fun things for young people and hence the positive image that alcohol now has. “It does not seem right that a toxic substance should evoke positive associations,” a spokesperson for STAP said.
