AMSTERDAM - A youth performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's Matthaeus Passion was due to premiere in the Netherlands at the Reformed Church De Brink in Bennekom, a small town in the eastern Netherlands, church representatives announced on Friday.

It marks the first time in the Netherlands that youngsters aged 6 to 23 will be performing the Matthaeus Passion, a musical piece traditionally performed during Easter.

The 70 young singers are students at the prestigious Dutch choir school Midden-Gelderland.

They will be accompanied by professional solo-singers and the 40-member Continuo Rotterdam orchestra.

The Midden-Gelderland choir school is for pupils aged 5 to 23. The students perform regularly in the Netherlands and abroad.

The Matthaeus Passion, written in 1727, sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew which recounts the crucifixion story of Jesus Christ, to music.
