AMSTERDAM – What could be the first self-portrait by Dutch master Vincent Van Gogh has been discovered in Amsterdam buried under another painting.

Aukje Vergeest, of the city's Van Gogh Museum, discovered the painting following an x-ray she made on a painting of a park by the Dutch master.

Further research is necessary to determine whether the portrait is authentic.

Using digital techniques, an expensive procedure, the two paintings can be pulled apart from one another.

The work, called People Walking in the Park, Paris, painted in autumn 1886, is part of a current Van Gogh Museum exhibition featuring works owned by the Noro Foundation.
