AMSTERDAM – UNESCO's World Heritage List is not balanced enough: western nature reserves and monuments dominate the list. The Council for the Rural Area and the Council for Culture have written this in a recommendation to the government.

The advisory councils think that the Netherlands should only nominate one site each year for the coming 10 years. This will leave more room for non-Western sites to be considered as well.

The Dutch sites to be nominated in future should fit in with the image that the Netherlands wants to present to the world, best characterised by topics like modernisation and the Netherlands and its relationship to water.
