Women win gold at European Championships

Swimmer Marleen Veldhuis and her teammates win gold medals and set a new world record Friday.

AMSTERDAM - At the European Championships in the Croatian city of Rijeka, Dutch swimmer Marleen Veldhuis won gold in the 50-metre freestyle race on Friday. It is her sixth consecutive European championship victory over 50 metres.  

Hinkelien Schroeder won a silver medal. Earlier in the day, Femke Heemskerk won a silver medal in the 200-metre freestyle.

The Dutch quartet of Hinkelien Schroeder, Inge Dekker, Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Marleen Veldhuis set a new world record in the 4x50-metre medley relay when they won gold on Friday.
