AMSTERDAM — Lifting the lid on the hush, hush topic of virginity, new research revealed on Monday that Dutch women are on average younger then men when they have sex for the first time.

The Maurice de Hond research indicated that by the age of 16, the number of girls who have had sex is 22 percent, the largest percentile group. The largest percentile (18 percent) among boys was the 18-year-old bracket.

On assignment from Veronica television programme De eerste keer (The First Time), the research bureau found that 11 percent of men lose their virginity at the age of 24 or older, while that is just 4 percent for women.

The survey found that 46 percent of the 800 respondents thought their first time was good, but primarily women (32 percent) said it was also awkward, newspaper De Telegraaf reported

Of note was that just 26 percent of respondents used contraceptive devices when they lost their virginity. Of those that did, 32 percent used a condom, while 29 percent of women were on the pill.
