AMSTERDAM —There was panic in the Kalvertoren (Kalver towers) in Amsterdam's main shopping district on Sunday when a woman was shot and injured.

The incident occurred in the crowded Hema department store at 4.30pm. Police sealed off the area and arrested a man.

Denying reports the woman was an employee of the store, a police spokesperson said the shooting appeared to be a domestic dispute.

The woman was hit several times but her injuries are not life threatening.

"I heard six shots," a witness said. "The shots sounded very close and I ran into a changing room where there were six other women."

"When I came out I saw a woman who worked for Hema lying injured. I did not see the suspect...everyone was running around in panic," she said.
