AMSTERDAM – Police report they have arrested a 23-year-old woman who threw or dropped her small child from the fourth storey of the Bijenkorf department store in Amsterdam on Monday evening before jumping off the building herself.

Both were brought to the hospital in critical condition. The 1-year-old child died shortly thereafter. The woman remains in hospital with serious injuries. Police say the jump was a suicide attempt.

The woman jumped from a balcony of the department store on Dam Square at about 6 pm. The Bijenkorf was evacuated immediately.

Dam Square was closed off for just under an hour so the emergency helicopter could land. Tram traffic resumed at about 8 pm, a spokesperson reported.

The identity of the victims and the woman's reason for jumping are unknown.
