AMSTERDAM — A 60-year-old woman died in an Almelo hospital on Thursday morning when a fire broke in the operating room where she was undergoing surgery.

The fire broke out at the time when the Almelo woman was being operated on.

The cause of the blaze in the Twenteborg Ziekenhuis is not yet known, newspaper 'De Telegraaf' reported.

Police have launched a forensics investigation to determine how the fire started.

A hospital spokeswoman said the entire surgery department around where the fire broke out has been shut down.

It is not yet clear when the department will reopen.

"We have sufficient operating capacity elsewhere in the hospital, so there is no talk of an acute problem," she said.
