AMSTERDAM – A 21-year-old woman died yesterday after undergoing cosmetic surgery in Utrecht. She had received a liposuction treatment, says ZKN, the umbrella organisation for private clinics. The cause of death is not clear.

The healthcare inspectorate is investigating how the operation suddenly turned deadly. Liposuction is not generally considered a high-risk operation.

A spokesperson for the inspectorate says the woman was undergoing the surgery at the private clinic on the Biltstraat. The clinic had reportedly leased out an operation room to Aestheticare, the company that performed the surgery.

The sector organisation ZKN says it is not familiar with the company. The Biltstraat Medical Centre is affiliated with the umbrella organisation however.

Complications made it necessary to transfer the woman to the University Medical Centre in Utrecht. She died there shortly after arrival.

Many private clinics have sprung up over the past few years. The healthcare inspectorate concluded in a report in 2004 that the quality of the care provided varies greatly. The inspectorate said in about 50 percent of cases it was unclear whether doctors had the proper qualifications for the treatments they were carrying out.

Nor was there always enough attention to hygiene, the inspectorate reported. Many clinics also lacked clear regulations for resuscitation, the administering of medicines and medical assistance for emergencies outside of office hours.

Sector organisation ZKN is trying to push poor quality clinics off the market by introducing a quality hallmark. Spokesperson Thijs Udo says he hopes insurance companies will choose only to conclude contracts with businesses that have been awarded a hallmark by the ZKN organisation.
