DE BILT – The winter of 2007/2008 was an extremely mild one. There have only been six warmer winters since 1901, the Dutch meteorological institute KNMI announced Friday.

The institute measured an average winter temperature of 5.2 degrees Celsius in De Bilt, compared to a long-term average of 3.3 degrees.

There was an average of 250 hours of sunlight throughout the country, compared to a normal average of 175.

January was particularly mild, the KNMI said, with an average temperature of 6.5 degrees. January usually has a normal average temperature of 2.8 degrees. This made January 2008 the second warmest January since record keeping started in 1706.

The winter was also rainy. Virtually all precipitation was in the form of rain rather than snow. 195 millimetres of precipitation fell throughout the country, in line with the normal average of 196.
