THE HAGUE – Crown Prince Willem-Alexander turns 40 today. He will be celebrating only in a small family gathering. The festivities will be toned down at the moment because of the birth of princess Ariane just two weeks ago.

On 1 September the prince will host a large celebration for his birthday. Extended family, friends and foreign royalty will be invited to the Het Loo palace in Apeldoorn.

Nederland 1 will present a 90-minute programme on Willem-Alexander tonight, showing him in his roles as heir to the throne, water management expert and father. Today is also the traditional awarding of honours for Queen's Day.
