Wilders to join Ground Zero mosque protest

Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders says he plans to demonstrate in New York on 11 September against plans to building a mosque near Ground Zero, the site of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Twin Towers by Islamic extremists.

Mr Wilders will also speak at the demonstration, which is being organised by a group called Stop Islamisation Of America. The leader of the Netherlands' anti-Islam Freedom Party says that by taking part he wants to support "the protest against building a mosque next to the place where Islam has committed the worst crime in recent years."

Earlier this week, it was announced that the controversial plan to build the mosque could go ahead. The plan envisages a 15-storey Islamic cultural centre, containing a mosque and a swimming pool.
