AMSTERDAM – Former Liberal VVD leader Frits Bolkestein thinks a number of Freedom Party PVV faction leader Geert Wilders' statements have been "excessive." Bolkestein said this Thursday evening on the television programme Den Haag Vandaag.

Bolkestein says Wilders is taking a much more radical position on issues now than when he left the VVD in 2004. Former faction leader Hans Dijkstal and current VVD MP Hans van Baalen said on the programme that Wilders had "radicalised" after his departure from the party.

Wilders worked as an employee for the VVD faction in the 1990s, while the party was led by Bolkestein. He was elected to Parliament for the first time in 1998. He left the party in 2004 because, unlike the rest of the party, he did not think that Turkey should be allowed membership in the EU.
