THE HAGUE – Former VVD leader Hans Wiegel wants the executive of the party to resign. He has written a letter to the executive calling for this.

A spokesperson for VVD party chairman Jan van Zanen confirmed a report to this effect in Het Parool on Wednesday.

Wiegel accuses the executive of not doing enough to keep Rita Verdonk in the party. He thinks she might still be willing to rejoin the VVD. Verdonk was first expelled from the party's faction in Parliament and then resigned in order to hold onto her seat in Parliament.

The spokesperson for Van Zanen says that the executive has received the letter and will respond during a party conference on 8 December.
