AMSTERDAM - Rita Verdonk has not succeeded in winning over Hans Wiegel to her new political party Proud of the Netherlands (ToN). The two discussed the matter on Thursday, the Telegraaf writes. Verdonk reportedly offered Wiegel the chairmanship of the advisory council to ToN.

Wiegel turned down the offer. "I am an honorary member of the VVD. I am not about to take on a certain position at another party," he responded in the newspaper. Wiegel is willing to advise Verdonk as an external expert.

Over a week ago Wiegel launched his plan to transform the VVD into a broader liberal movement. Verdonk replied that the "broad people's movement" envisioned by Wiegel had already existed for some time, referring to her own party. She called on WIegel and other heavyweights in Dutch politics to join ToN.
