AMSTERDAM – Summer weather is in store for the Netherlands this weekend. Temperatures to will rise to more than 25 degrees in some places on Saturday and Sunday.

The KNMI meteorological institute says this is "uncommon" for mid April. Normal temperatures are around 12 to 13 degrees.

The warm dry weather however could increase the risk of roadside and forest fires. There has been unusually little precipitation in the country since 22 March. Nor is any rain expected in the next few days.

Motorists' association ANWB expects traffic congestion on the roads to the coast over the weekend. "That will undoubtedly be accompanied by parking problems in the beach towns," a spokesperson said.

Organisers of the Rotterdam marathon say they have taken extra measures. More water posts will be set up along the route.
