NIJMEGEN – The first participants in this year’s Vierdaagse in Nijmegen have completed the first leg of the walk.

They crossed the finish line well before noon on Tuesday.

The 89th edition of the Vierdaagse started at 4am on Tuesday.

Participant Ina Kuik of Renkum was optimistic, although the finish line wasn’t yet in view. ‘We’re halfway there, and we’re on schedule,’ said Kuik, who’s doing the 40km walk with a friend. ‘We just ate. Our families were waiting for us by the side of the road with lunch packets.'

Kuik said the weather was perfect for walking. ‘It’s stayed dry and there’s a cool breeze. Lovely.’

Participants set out on Tuesday on either a 30-, 40- or 50km walk through the Betuwe. The 43,498 walkers will pass through places including Bemmel, Huissen, Arnhem and Elst.

Thousands of onlookers will cheer them on.
