The Netherlands - At its annual committee session, this year held in Spain, the World Heritage Committee has added the Wadden Sea to its list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

The Netherlands and Germany had submitted a joint request to designate the conservation area, stretching from Texel in the Netherlands to Sylt in Germany, as a world heritage site.

Dutch Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg responded enthusiastically to the move. The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality says the UNESCO designation emphasises the global environmental importance of the Wadden Sea, an area deserving of protection. The Dutch Wadden Association is also thrilled with the news.
