AMSTERDAM – Minister for Living, Neighbourhoods and Integration Ella Vogelaar visited the Utrecht neighbourhood of Ondiep on Monday.
She talked with residents, police, the public prosecution department, youth social workers and the housing corporation. She praised the residents for their solidarity during the riots. She did not want to visit the neighbourhood earlier so as to prevent the area from being labelled a "problem neighbourhood," she said.
"We had a candid talk, during which the residents were very open about their thoughts," Vogelaar said.
Mayor Brouwer was also there for the talks. "The most important thing is that Ondiep residents go on with their lives."
Disturbances broke out in the neighbourhood after a police officer shot and killed a 54-year-old area resident who was brandishing a knife. Commotion in the neighbourhood continued for several days.
"We have to ensure that Ondiep doesn't get a bad reputation because of this. This is not an incident that has specifically to do with Ondiep. Something like this could have happened elsewhere."
