Violent robberies on the rise
Use of violence on the rise as 'Crime Metre' records more than 2,000 robberies in 2007.

The number of violent robberies in the Netherlands has increased sharply. The AD newspaper's 'Crime Metre' recorded more than 2,000 robberies in 2007, committed mainly against cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. This represents an increase of 20 percent, one that affects not just the large cities, but also small towns such as Enschede and Sittard outside the main urban area.
Police commissioners admit that there has been an increase, but say that it is only 13 percent. AD reached a figure of 20 percent, a police representative said, because it also included muggings.
