AMSTERDAM — A 39-year-old Amsterdam man, known to police as a violent offender, died on Monday night after being arrested.
The man was detained in a home on the Ranonkelkade in Amsterdam North after having violently resisting arrest. Officers eventually subdued the man, but he later became unwell and died at the scene, the police say.
Despite describing him as a violent offender, police have refused to reveal what the man was being arrested for. But residents have claimed the man was a burglar and a rough man.
Eyewitnesses told RTL News that police treated the man violently, bashing his head against the ground. Police and ambulance officers then tried in vain to resuscitate him, it was reported.
An investigation has been launched into the man's death.
