AMSTERDAM – Police rounded up 12 members of a violent criminal gang in Amsterdam-West on Tuesday. The gang is suspected of about 80 break-ins at businesses. The core members of the gang are now in custody. A total of about 30 suspects were arrested in the investigation.

The gang was particularly violent. In two break-ins, guards were assaulted with a sledgehammer. The suspects of these particular offences are among those arrested.

The Amsterdam police commissioner Welten said on Wednesday on the current affairs programme Netwerk that he expects more arrests to follow.

Most of the gang members are of Moroccan background. Police say they started dabbling in petty crime and gradually became "career criminals."
