UTRECHT – The number of reports of sexual abuse and intimidation and physical and emotional violence at schools increased by 40 percent during the 2005/2006 school year.

This has emerged from figures from the education inspectorate. A total of 1,419 complaints were received by school counsellors in the 2005/2006 school year, up from 1,015 in the previous year. There was primarily an increase in the number of reports of physical violence.

Only in cases of sexual abuse are schools required to contact the education inspectorate.
