Villagers form human shield to protect oaks
Dozens of residents of the village of Gorssel in the province of Gelderland managed to prevent several old oak trees being cut down on Saturday.
GORSSEL - They formed a human shield around the trees, along the side of a road, and forced the mayor to cancel the felling.
The local council had recently decided that many of the trees were sick and needed to be cut down.
Residents disagreed and said one of the reasons they had come to the village was because of its greenery.
The council also said the trees needed to be cut down so the road they bordered could be widened.
Following an emergency debate, the mayor and the residents' committee agreed that a few sick trees would be felled but not the rest. A decision will be made about their future later.
