Veteran Dutch politician slams China and NATO
Former minister Jan Pronk accuses China of looting the continent and is calling for NATO to withdraw troops from Afghanistan11 June 2008
Former Dutch development cooperation minister Jan Pronk is accusing China of behaving like a colonial power in Africa and even of looting the continent.
Pronk, who also served as the UN's special envoy to Sudan, says China is buying up raw materials, such as oil, from Sudan and setting up development projects.
He says China itself is profiting most from these projects. He believes the European Union should take China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to task over its behaviour in Africa.
Pronk is also calling for NATO to get out of Afghanistan. He thinks that NATO forces are simply making Western countries increasingly unpopular with the Afghan people. He maintains the groups against which the NATO troops are fighting, such as the Taliban and al-Qaeda, cannot be defeated.
