THE HAGUE - Rita Verdonk, who was expelled from the VVD faction in Parliament on Thursday, will not inform her party on Friday of what she plans to do with her seat in Parliament.

She will request more time for the decision on whether to remain in her seat as an independent or put it at the disposal of the VVD, say insiders.

Verdonk will most likely wait until after the VVD conference this weekend before making a decision. She said on Friday that she did not know yet whether she would attend the conference, but the chance of this is slim.

Verdonk's adviser Ed Sinke suggested on Thursday evening that there might be room for mediation efforts, for example by prominent VVD members like Frits Bolkestein or Hans Wiegel. VVD faction leader Mark Rutte rejected this possibility immediately.

It probably will not be clear what Verdonk plans to do until after this weekend's conference.
