AMSTERDAM - Immigration and Integration Minister Rita Verdonk plans to spend EUR 350,000 to bring the subject of homosexuality into the open among ethnic minorities, according to a letter she wrote Tuesday to the Dutch House of Representatives.

The Minister wants to stimulate social acceptance of homosexuality among ‘allochtonen’ (immigrants).

The subject is for some ethnic minorities taboo.

This target group will be invited to participate in discussions and debates regarding homosexuality.

The institute for multicultural development, FORUM, will play a leading role in this project. It intends to help youths adopt a critical and open attitude towards homosexuality.

It will first conduct a quick scan to determine in how far homosexuality is a taboo among ethnic minorities. Then by setting up discussions and debates, young immigrants will be allowed to play an active role in the FORUM activities.
