Vegetable surprise for Romanian MEPs

Romania’s MEPs can expect an unusual gift on Tuesday. Christian Democrat Esther de Lange will be giving her Romanian colleagues a basket of Dutch vegetables. This gesture is her response to President Traian Basescu’s call to the Romanian people to stop buying Dutch vegetables. The president's appeal was seemingly provoked by the Netherlands’ opposition to Romania and Bulgaria joining the European Union’s passport-free Schengen Area.

De Lange:

The Dutch MEP will be asking the European Commission about the Romanian president’s behaviour. Christian Democrat MP Henk Jan Ormel says Romania would be advised to concentrate on cleaning up corruption at home instead of boycotting Dutch vegetables.

He plans to ask Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal for his reaction in parliament on Tuesday.
