Van den Hende invested as new bishop of Rotterdam
Hans van den Hende was invested as the new bishop of the Rotterdam diocese on Saturday.
His investment occurred during a mass in the Rotterdam cathedral attended by Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb and Archbishop Wim Eijk.
Van den Hende, the former bishop of Breda, succeeds Ad van Luyn who was bishop for 17 years and recently retired.
Bishop Van den Hende’s appointment came as a surprise. Only very rarely have Dutch bishops been moved from one diocese to another, although some bishops have been 'promoted', like for instance Cardinal Ad Simonis who first served as bishop before being appointed Archbishop of Utrecht.
Van den Hende was bishop of Breda for five years, and at 47 is the youngest of the Dutch diocesan bishops.
