WASHINGTON – Defence Minister Eimert van Middelkoop wishes the troops in Afghanistan could count on more support from the Dutch public.

In an interview with the NOS Journaal Van Middelkoop said that support is growing, but that he misses a sense of patriotism.

"I am sometimes jealous of countries like Canada and Australia, where there is a sort of shield of patriotism around the soldiers," Van Middelkoop said.

The discussion in the Netherlands is too focused on the possible extension of the mission, he said, and does not touch on the good work that the soldiers are doing now.

The minister was in the US over the past few days to talk about the mission in Afghanistan and other matters.
